ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO 3

Project 1: Journey for the Five Senses

The objective is to identify and analyze spatial order and spatial poetics through precedent studies. The analysis of the design approaches will inform the preceding design projects for the remaining semester. Thus, the selection of precedents should be critical and inspirational based on the given poetry. Using the design strategies, we are to design a walk themed ‘journey for the five senses’.

Project 2: Genius Loci- Site Analysis & Concept Development

In groups, we are to conduct site analysis of the physical context, social, cultural and/or historical issues within the overall site. Individually, we have to produce our personal interpretation of the site in the form of sketches. The personal interpretations of the overall character of the site will inform subsequent design decisions, and it is important to record these honestly and immediately.

Project 3: Genius Loci- Visitor's Intepretive Centre (VIC)

The interpretive centre will serve two purposes:

  • To provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the culture/history/memory/essence of the site

  • To provide accommodation to house and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information.

Solutions relying heavily on landscape are encouraged. Visitors should be inspired and informed in ways that somehow express the spirit of the place (genius loci). An appropriate use of natural lighting and ventilation should be considered. Strategies should be developed that reflect the climate, culture and context of the building.

BUILDING SCIENCE 1

Project 1: Human Perception Of Comfort Level

For this task, we are to measure and find out the range of air temperature that is within the comfort level for us in a group. We are to also discuss other factors relating to thermal comfort. If the temperature is within the comfort range, we will explain the reasons in terms of climate, human factor and building. If the temperature is not within the comfort range, we will again explain the reasons by analyzing the building and site in context.

Project 2: Intergration with Design Studio 3

The understanding of thermal comfort within the site and building in context must be evident in the integration. Examples include the Site analysis [Sun and Wind analysis], Sun-shading, Overall Heat Transfer Value,Basic Building Design and Thermal Comfort.

COMPUTER APPLICATIONS

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION 2

Experiencing and understanding skeletal construction is important as it is one of the most widely used structures for building support. As a designer we should know how skeletal structure works. Skeletal structure provides the load bearing resistance of the structure and supports the secondary elements.

Project 2:  Understanding Forces in Solid Structure and Surface Structure

A building will normally comprise several different types of structural systems, either due to its function or building code requirements. As designers it is very important that you understand when and where each of the different type of structural system is used.Solid and surface construction method is one of the most widely used structures for building support. Solid and surface structure provides the required load bearing resistance and aesthetics required by designers.
